Maths - Tessellations

A tessellation is a pattern of shapes that fit together to make a pattern, picture or even mosaic. In our maths seminar we created tessellations by cutting out the same shape from a template sheet and then positioning them together to see which combinations made different shapes and patterns. This is a lovely relaxed and creative activity to take into schools as it is enjoyable and does not feel like maths but you are learning to experiment with shape to create new shape combinations. It could be used as a starter activity for a lesson on shape and space and you could give them a time limit by using things such as the countdown tune to ensure the activity last for the amount of time you want it to. The hungry caterpillar..

This week I have planned around the book the hungry caterpillar, and it's all very exciting stuff 😉 So far we have been making butterfly prints using paint and mixing the colours! They really loved this and our classroom is now the proud home of a butterfly mobile made from two metal coat hangers and string!  We have also used our mark making skills on big circles of paper after taking about the very hungry caterpillar. We sat outside and drew what we saw around us, spotting butterflies fluttering around!  They have also really enjoyed talking about the fruits that the hungry caterpillar eats. I had a bag with the fruit inside,  and we sang a song "what's in the bag" then they were able to select a piece of fruit in turn. Tomorrow I am going to put a watermelon in the bag as well!

Pictorial Poster

After having been a task to design a pictorial poster to advertise coming to visit Plymouth we began by asking ourselves what a poster is in one word, and came up with answers such as visual, concise, propaganda and informative. Other definitions that came up were any piece of printed paper designed to be attached to wall or vertical surface and uses text and graphics – sometimes just one or the other. We then looked at the purpose of a poster and came up with answers such as to convey meaning, instructional, to request, to protest and for advertising purposes. When researching what components make a poster I found that Aristoff stated ‘A less-is-more principle remains a reasonable assumption: the fewer informative elements used, the more appealing and effective the poster’.
