Sarah Downham Lotto

Last week on the course we had two art trips, one was to visit the Plymouth College of Art and Design (PCAD) to see an artist's exhibit and work with her, then we visited her studio to continue working on a collaberative piece of artwork.

The amazing artist we worked with was Sarah Downham Lotto who works with mixed media and collage to create amazing pieces of work. Have a mooch at her work, her website is www.sarastudio.net

We started out with a HUGE sheet of paper and with black marker pens we added shapes, lines and doodles inspired by her work (which featured a lot of circles as you'll see in the pictures below.


Then we added colour using coloured inks.




And then added detail with coloured tissue paper and crepe paper.



I will be honest, I didn't like certain aspects when completing this work, but actually when reflecting on it all of the different aspects work well together and I did enjoy making it and liked the outcome. It's defiantly something that I would do with children in a classroom or as an extra curricular project as it is a fun piece of work. Also because it's collaberative this means that the children have to work together which is always interesting to watch!

Maths - Tessellations

A tessellation is a pattern of shapes that fit together to make a pattern, picture or even mosaic. In our maths seminar we created tessellations by cutting out the same shape from a template sheet and then positioning them together to see which combinations made different shapes and patterns. This is a lovely relaxed and creative activity to take into schools as it is enjoyable and does not feel like maths but you are learning to experiment with shape to create new shape combinations. It could be used as a starter activity for a lesson on shape and space and you could give them a time limit by using things such as the countdown tune to ensure the activity last for the amount of time you want it to. English - Story Telling

For Homework in English we got set to go away and learn a story and a poem off by heart. Now this sounds like a simple enough task but when you actually try it becomes trickier, you worry you will  forget the order of the story or the words and end up looking silly in front of your peers, plus however much you practice your story there is always that one section which catches you out! Me, Abi and Amy decided that as a group we would learn the story ' We're going on a Bear Hunt ' and after listening to our English seminar lecturer talking about Pie Corbett and how he told stories we decided we were going to not only tell the story but tell it with actions, this helps make it more engaging and interactive for the children plus they can join in with your actions! Enamelling with the Enamellers guild...

I have been a member of the Enamellers guild for a few years now and have only been to one meeting so far... So I thought this year that should change, and I signed up for the workshop/meeting last weekend with Ruth Ball. We experimented with surface design and how to create a matte finish on enamelled pieces. It was really interesting, that is when I finally found the English bridge workshop (the place it was  held at).  Ruth was an amazing teacher and really very modest about her ability, here are some photos of her stuff...
